Thirteen years after the last mainline entry in the series, Rockstar Games finally gave fans an extended official look at "Grand Theft Auto VI" last week — and the demand was so intense it briefly overwhelmed two of the world's biggest streaming platforms.

In an unusual arrangement, Netflix was given first rights to premiere the roughly 27-minute segment of in-game footage on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET, ahead of its later release on YouTube. The clip was captured entirely from a PlayStation 5 build of the game, which is due out on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.

Traffic Overload

Both Netflix and gaming platform Twitch reported bandwidth strain as millions of viewers tried to tune in at once, a scramble that only underlined how closely the release had been anticipated after a run of unauthorised leaks in the days leading up to the official drop.

Take-Two Stock Reacts

Shares in Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, moved higher in premarket trading the following day as analysts pointed to the frenzy as concrete evidence of blockbuster demand. Some noted the stock could still use a further boost from positive news on the game's separate online multiplayer component to sustain a longer rerating.

What Fans Actually Saw

The footage followed returning protagonists Jason and Lucia across the fictional state of Leonida, home to a modern-day reimagining of Vice City, as an easy score goes wrong and pulls the pair into a conspiracy stretching across the state. Rockstar also confirmed new gameplay systems, including non-player characters that remember and react to a player's past actions.

A Franchise Under Pressure

The reveal lands after a bumpy road to launch: the release date has already slipped twice, from an original 2025 target to now November 2026, and the studio has weathered a major security breach in past years along with a fresh wave of leaked, unfinished footage just days before this official preview.

Billions On The Line

Games-analytics firm Newzoo projects launch-week sales could reach $4.5 billion, a figure that would put "GTA 6" in rare company alongside its predecessor, which remains one of the best-selling entertainment products of all time in any medium. With the marketing campaign now fully underway three months out from launch, the appetite on display last week suggests "GTA 6" is already on track to be the defining entertainment release of the year.
