Aaron Donald, one of the most dominant defensive linemen in NFL history, is coming out of retirement to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams for the 2026 season, the team confirmed, ending more than two years away from the game.
The Deal
Donald, 35, has signed a one-year contract worth $20 million that can climb to $30 million with playoff incentives, according to reporting from NFL Network and ESPN. The move caps weeks of speculation that began after the Rams traded for Myles Garrett, the league's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, in June.
A Comeback Months In The Making
Donald said the trade for Garrett got him thinking about a return, and he spent the following weeks working out privately before holding an official tryout with the team in early August. He described the decision as a family one, saying his wife's support was essential before he committed to playing again.
Reuniting A Championship Core
Donald walked away from football in March 2024 after ten seasons entirely with the Rams franchise, a career that included three Defensive Player of the Year awards, ten Pro Bowl selections, eight All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl ring. He now joins Garrett to form a defensive front that pairs two players who between them have combined for five of the last nine Defensive Player of the Year awards.
Cautious Optimism From The Coaching Staff
Head coach Sean McVay has stopped short of committing to Donald for the Week 1 opener, saying the team will bring him back into game shape gradually rather than rushing his return. Even so, oddsmakers and analysts have already installed the Rams among the favorites to reach the Super Bowl now that Donald's return is official.
